Reflections from Outer Space: Gold Mirrors on Telescopes

Because it is an excellent reflector of infrared light, gold is a critical component of an exciting new space telescope set to be launched by NASA in 2021. The James Webb Space Telescope has a mission to search for the first galaxies that formed in the early universe. To observe galaxies that are so distant – over 13 billion light years away from us – the telescope will rely on a large mirror, and that mirror will be covered with a microscopically-thin layer of gold.
