Hecla’s innovation solutions range from simple to complex, and we optimize each site based on its customized operational priorities. One of our earliest innovations was using location tracking technology for personnel and equipment at our Greens Creek Mine in Alaska. We then combined tracking with programmed logic controllers to interface with monitoring and control software.
All this is made possible by fiber optic cable that helps establish “hotspots” to bring wireless technology more than a mile below the surface in solid rock, which also enables our workers to use tablets underground.
“The geologists can go into that work area and rather than having 20 maps with him, he has a tablet and he looks up the face map, the mine plans for that area, from that tablet,” said Bob Haecker, Mill Manager at Greens Creek Mine in Alaska.
