Hecla’s Corporate Director of Safety and Health, Michael Wegleitner, brings the safety message home and to nearby schools. Every year, Hecla participates in the Northwest Natural Resources Institute Model Mine Program for Spokane, Washington elementary schools so students can learn about rocks and minerals, miner safety, and the importance of mine reclamation. Wegleitner engages the students by asking them to brainstorm what situations miners might encounter around large equipment and what they must wear to stay safe. He also teaches them about the dangers of playing in or near abandoned mines.
At Hecla, we not only expect our employees to embrace and practice safety at work but also urge them to take safety home and educate their families and others in the community.
